5 mistakes to avoid when self-driving from Hoi An to Quang Ngai in a day
A day trip from Hoi An to Quang Ngai is less about how far you can drive and more about how well you manage the day. The route changes depending on your vehicle, the expressway comes with its own rules and costs, and even one extra stop can push the return journey late. Here are five mistakes worth avoiding before you set off.

Is Hoi An to Quang Ngai in a day actually doable?
Yes, but only if it’s planned as one focused destination rather than an attempt to cover the whole province. The road distance runs roughly 110 to 130 kilometres depending on exactly where in Quang Ngai the trip ends, and on a map, that looks like a short, easy outing.
What the map doesn’t show is everything else a real day trip involves: getting out of Hoi An itself, rest stops, meals, fuel, parking, actual time at the destination, and the full drive back. Add those up and a “two-hour drive” day trip easily becomes a 10 to 12-hour day once the full itinerary is accounted for honestly.

5 mistakes to avoid when self-driving from Hoi An to Quang Ngai
The five mistakes below are the ones that most commonly turn a manageable day trip into a stressful, rushed one.
Mistake 1: Only looking at distance, not real travel time
The distance on Google Maps is only part of the story. You also need to consider the time it takes to leave Hoi An, stop along the way, eat, visit your destination, and drive back.
For example, the expressway section between Da Nang and Quang Ngai is around 140 km. At the posted speed limit of up to 120 km/h, the driving time can look surprisingly short on a map. But your actual day will take much longer.

Allow around 30-45 minutes to get from your hotel in Hoi An to the highway, plus a 15-20-minute rest stop each way. You may also need an hour or more for lunch and around 1.5-2 hours at a historical site such as Son My. Once all of this is added, a day trip can easily mean leaving Hoi An around 6:30-7:00 AM and getting back around 7:00-8:00 PM.
That is why it is better to plan around two fixed times: when you want to arrive and the latest time you need to leave Quang Ngai. This gives you a clear point to turn back instead of trying to fit everything into the day.
Mistake 2: Choosing a route by map alone, without considering the vehicle
The route from Hoi An to Quang Ngai is different depending on whether you are driving a car or riding a motorbike. Choosing the route first and checking the vehicle later can put you on the wrong road.
If you are driving a car, the Da Nang-Quang Ngai Expressway can speed up much of the journey. Check your entry point before leaving, especially around Quang Nam and Nui Thanh, as some ramps are not obvious from QL1A. Missing the turn can mean a detour and extra time.
If you are riding a motorbike, do not follow the car route. Motorbikes are not allowed on expressways in Vietnam, so the journey needs to stay on the regular road network. This is why it matters which vehicle you select in Google Maps. Choose the motorbike icon before starting navigation. Google Maps will then avoid expressway sections when calculating the route.

For either vehicle, QL1A is not the same driving experience as the expressway. The road passes through populated areas and intersections, and you can encounter trucks and container vehicles. Your actual speed will also be much lower than on the expressway. A route that looks shorter on the map may therefore take longer and require more attention behind the wheel.
For a first self-drive trip from Hoi An to Quang Ngai, check these three things before leaving:
- What are you driving? Car and motorbike routes are not interchangeable.
- Where exactly do you enter and leave the expressway? Don’t rely on finding the ramp while driving.
- How much of the journey is on QL1A? This affects both your travel time and the driving conditions.

Mistake 3: Entering the expressway without knowing the speed, toll cost, or lane rules
Maximum expressway speed on this stretch is generally 120 km/h, though it’s set by posted signage and can vary slightly by section. Drivers with little expressway experience commonly make a specific set of mistakes: holding an inconsistent speed, sitting in the wrong lane, changing lanes abruptly, following too closely, or getting overconfident simply because the road is quiet.
Don’t hand the entire expressway leg to someone unfamiliar with long-distance highway driving; if travelling as a group, it’s worth having the most experienced highway driver take this specific stretch.
| Item | Detail |
| Speed limit | Up to 120 km/h, check posted signage by section |
| Toll cost (car, under 12 seats) | Roughly 150,000-220,000 VND one-way depending on entry/exit points; full Da Nang-Quang Ngai route runs around 216,000 VND for a standard car |
| Toll system | ETC (electronic toll collection) only on most sections; tag and account balance must be topped up before entering |
| Before entering | Confirm ETC balance, confirm entry and exit points in advance, avoid lane changes near interchanges |
| Fuel | Budget for the full round trip, not just one way |

Tolls are charged by the actual section driven rather than a flat rate for the whole route, so a partial trip from the Hoi An area costs noticeably less than the full Da Nang-to-Quang Ngai fare. As of 2026, toll sections further south, including Quang Ngai-Hoai Nhon, began charging from August 14, 2026, which is worth budgeting for if the route extends that far.
Mistake 4: Packing too many stops into a first trip
Quang Ngai’s attractions are spread across a large area, so adding “just one more stop” can quickly turn a manageable day trip into a long day on the road. For a first trip, keep it simple: one main destination, one or two extra stops if they are directly on the route, and a fixed time to leave Quang Ngai.
If Son My is your main stop, give it enough time rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. The memorial site, which commemorates the 1968 My Lai massacre, is about 14 km from central Quang Ngai (Source: VietNam Net). It opens from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with an entrance fee of around 15,000 VND including parking. Allow around 1.5-2 hours for the visit, especially if you want to understand the history rather than simply pass through.

It is also better not to combine Son My with several destinations further south or west on the same day. Every extra stop means more driving, parking and time getting back onto the main route.
Sa Huynh and Ly Son are better saved for another trip. Sa Huynh takes you further south, adding to the total driving distance. Ly Son requires even more planning:
- Drive to Sa Ky Port
- Check the ferry schedule
- Allow for weather conditions
- Leave enough time to explore the island
- Catch the return ferry back to the mainland
That logistics chain is difficult to fit into the same day as a Quang Ngai sightseeing stop. If Ly Son is on your list, treat it as a separate trip rather than adding it to a Hoi An-Quang Ngai day trip. Our guide to whether the trip from Hoi An to Ly Son Island is worth it explains the extra logistics.
Mistake 5: Having no backup plan when the schedule slips
A day trip can look comfortable on paper and still start running late after the first stop. A longer lunch, slow traffic on QL1A, rain, or simply spending more time at Son My than expected can quickly eat into the return journey.
The easiest fix is to decide your latest departure time from Quang Ngai before leaving Hoi An. Treat that as the point you stop adding activities, rather than trying to squeeze in one more attraction because it is “on the way.”

A useful rule is:
- Up to 30 minutes behind: shorten the next stop.
- About 1 hour behind: remove the secondary stop.
- More than 1-2 hours behind: consider whether the same-day return still makes sense.
This is especially important if your plan includes several stops. Son My, for example, can be the fixed main destination, while smaller stops along the route are the first things to cut when the schedule slips. That keeps the day flexible without turning the return to Hoi An into a late-night drive.
What does self-driving Hoi An to Quang Ngai actually cost?
Self-driving has no single ticket price. The cost comes from many small items, so it helps to list them before you go.
| Item | Estimated cost (round trip, standard car) |
| Fuel | Roughly 400,000-600,000 VND depending on vehicle and fuel prices |
| Toll fees | Roughly 300,000-440,000 VND round trip (partial route from Hoi An area) |
| Parking | 10,000-30,000 VND per stop |
| Lunch for two | Roughly 150,000-250,000 VND at a local restaurant |
| Coffee/snacks | Roughly 50,000-100,000 VND |
| Buffer | 200,000-300,000 VND for anything unplanned |

Carry some cash. Many small sites and parking attendants may not accept cards. If you are staying at Bliss Hoi An Beach Resort & Wellness and would rather not drive, you can also ask the resort’s Transportation Service for a full-day quote and check exactly what the price includes.

A suggested Hoi An-Quang Ngai Day-Trip itinerary
A practical day trip should have one main stop, a few breaks and a fixed turn-back time. You can adjust your departure time depending on your driving speed, but avoid spending so long in Quang Ngai that it affects the return journey.
Morning: Hoi An → Quang Ngai
Leave around 6:30-7:00 AM to give yourself plenty of time for both directions. Have breakfast before leaving or stop along the way, and plan at least one break during the drive. If you need a short rest, Tam Ky can be a convenient place to stop for coffee, stretch your legs and check the route before continuing towards Quang Ngai. The drive from Hoi An to Tam Ky is roughly 46 km, while Tam Ky to Quang Ngai is about 67 km by road.
Noon: One Main Stop and Lunch
If Son My is your main destination, allow around 1.5-2 hours at the memorial site rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. It is a historical site, so the time you need will depend on how deeply you want to explore and understand its history.
After the visit, there is no need to drive into central Quang Ngai just for lunch. Banh Xeo Ba Loi in Tinh Khe is a convenient local stop near the Son My area, where you can try Quang Ngai specialties such as banh xeo, don and ca bong song Tra before continuing south. If you want to pick up something to take home, keo guong is another local specialty worth looking for.

Afternoon: Quang Ngai → Hoi An
Leave Quang Ngai around 2:30 PM. This gives you enough time for the drive back to Hoi An, a rest stop and possible delays along the way.
On the return journey, plan at least one break so the driver can rest. If it starts getting dark, the journey takes longer than expected or the driver is tired, do not speed to make up time. The turn-back time can change, but safety should not be cut from the itinerary.
When should you not self-drive from Hoi An to Quang Ngai in a day?
Self-driving is not for every traveler. Think about hiring a driver, or splitting the trip into two days, if any of these sound like you:
- You are not used to long drives.
- You do not feel comfortable on expressways.
- The vehicle has not been checked.
- You want to see too many places.
- The weather is bad.
- You must be back in Hoi An at a fixed time.
- You want to add Ly Son on the same day.
Having a driver also lets you focus on the visit. Son My stays with people, and many travelers say they were glad they did not have to drive right after.
Where should you rest in Hoi An after a full day of driving?
After a full day of driving from Hoi An to Quang Ngai and back, there is little reason to plan another activity in the evening. A better way to end the day is to slow down, have a proper meal and give your body time to recover.
At Bliss Hoi An Beach Resort & Wellness, the evening can be as simple as a swim in the 55-metre oceanfront infinity pool, a walk along Binh Minh Beach or some quiet time in your room. Dinner is easy to keep on-site at Binh Minh Restaurant, where Vietnamese and European flavours are served in a beachfront setting. The restaurant is open from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM, so you do not need to rush back from the drive to fit in an early dinner.
